ABOUT UMRC 2013
In the world of research today, the old cliché stands firm; change is the only constant.   In keeping up with the changes of the research world, the University of Malaya Researchers’ Conference has taken a novel approach. It has been the key notion of the University of Malaya’s research agenda to promote multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary research programs.
It has been a practice of convention that conferences are niche in character and stand distinct in its own discipline. To break down the barrier which separates the research disciplines, this conference will attempt to break new grounds by finding the common ground in our distinctly diverse research. As such, grand challenges are introduced with the aim of engaging creative minds across scientific and non-scientific disciplines.
This year’s UMR Conference leaves behind niche conferences and for the very first time, introduces the conceptual Grand Challenges. A thematic concept is introduced as the Grand Challenge. This approach allows the discussion of Grand Challenge themes to take place from various aspects in the form of a forum. Such a moderated forum not only allows various disciplines to work on the same issues side by side, but further nurtures a multidisciplinary cooperation when it comes to research.  The highlight of this year’s UMR Conference is the deliberation of several Grand Challenges. These include:

GRAND CHALLENGE 1: LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST
GRAND CHALLENGE 2: WORLD WITHOUT CONFLICT
GRAND CHALLENGE 3: SUSTAINABILITY & ACHIEVING OPTIMAL URBAN WELL BEING
GRAND CHALLENGE 4: SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES & TECHNOLOGY
GRAND CHALLENGE 5: PUSHING ECONOMICS BORDER
